Floor beds for babies – when do they make sense? An expert guide for parents

Not every baby feels comfortable behind crib bars. More and more parents are looking for alternatives to the traditional crib – something that’s safe, but also more natural, accessible, and developmentally supportive. That’s exactly why the floor bed inspired by Montessori education is making such a strong comeback. But is it really a good idea for a baby? And if so, from when?

What is a floor bed?

A floor bed is a low children’s bed without high bars or legs, placed almost directly on the floor. This allows the child to climb in and out independently. Inspired by the Montessori approach, it supports independence and development – provided it is age-appropriate in design.

When can a baby sleep in a floor bed?

Contrary to what many think, floor beds are not just for toddlers. Even babies from around five to six months old – when they start rolling over, crawling, or sitting up – can benefit from a floor bed, as long as the environment is safe.

At this stage, the bed should be especially low and stable. For added security and coziness, use bed bumpers – soft cushions placed along the wall or bed edge. They prevent bumps and define the sleep zone clearly.

What bed size is suitable for babies?

It’s tempting to buy a big bed “for later,” such as one measuring 200×140 cm. But that’s not an ideal solution for a baby. Why?

First, a baby doesn’t need such a large sleeping area. A bed that’s too big can reduce the sense of safety.

Second, beds of that size are designed for older children – not for co-sleeping with a parent. A children’s bed is not a substitute for an adult bed.

A better choice for babies are models in 140×70 or 160×80 cm. These sizes are comfortable, easy to oversee, and provide a safe and cozy sleeping frame.

Safety is the top priority

If you decide on a floor bed for a baby, make sure to pay attention to the following:

Mattress – For small children, the mattress should be firm or medium-firm to support healthy spinal development. It must fit the bed perfectly and be made from breathable, non-toxic materials.

Surroundings – The area around the bed should be softly padded, for example with a rug or play mat.

Bed bumpers are an excellent way to define the sleep area while adding a touch of coziness.

Why do parents choose a floor bed?

Because it brings peace – for the baby and the parents. Because it combines safety, aesthetics, and functionality. And because it adapts to the child – not the other way around.
